Integrated Circuits through political Butterflies
Project Description:
Over the past 2 months we have been learning about circuits, electricity, Ohm's Law etc. in Physics. Since we were reading the book In The Time of The Butterflies and were learning about different political issues and topics our teacher decided to connect the two projects together and create a mini exhibition project. We had to create butterflies that flapped their wings and also had LED bulbs, so that it could light up, using what we learned about circuits in class.
Who did you get the most help from? How did you use feedback?
Before we got to the actual building of the butterflies we had to know more about the mechanical system we were going to create and the design we were going to add onto the wings. This took some time, patience, and critique. The people I sat next to helped me improve the shape of my butterfly wings and also told me to come up with more creative ideas and colors to use on the design for my wings. All the feedback mostly came into play the last week of work time just because that is when I finished my mechanical system and got my butterfly to flap its wings.
What did you make in this project? What are a few things you learned?
Before you can build the butterfly you have to know how electrons move through wires, how much resistance a circuit might have, how to calculate how high the voltage of a battery might be knowing how many objects you have connected to the circuit. I had to learn about all of this before actually building. Some things I learned became really helpful when building my butterfly because I was able to figure out the mistakes I had created in my light bulb circuit and also how to fix it.
What struggles did you have and how did you overcome them? What went well in this project?
Getting the mechanical system of my butterfly to work was a part of the butterfly that took a lot of time and patience but also created stress. I was able to overcome this challenge by staying clam and working through my problems slowly, even though I could have rushed.
What things did you do well concerning work ethic?
I worked really hard every period of every day to get my butterfly working. I didn't want to waster even a day because I knew that it could result in me not having enough time to troubleshoot. I focused more on the mechanical system of my butterfly because before I could attach my wings I would have to create a support for them.
