10th Grade College At CAl Poly Pomona
This year, my sophomore year of high school, we had the opportunity to go to one of three different colleges. Our oppositions were Cal State Fullerton, San Diego State University and Cal Poly Pomona. I chose to go to Cal Poly Pomona. The reason I wanted to visit this campus is to learn what was so great about it. I went there knowing close to nothing but at my time there it looked like a great place (except for the dorms, they looked kind of tacky). It was not bad and it actually made me look forward to college even more.
Reflection 1 of 3 (The College)
Somethings I liked about this college were the facilities it had. We were told that at Cal Poly Pomona there are study rooms all over the place and we could even rent some out for big projects, even though I'm not a fan of studying it will be important in college and will be a place I need. There is also a game room and many food courts cafeterias and large open areas of grass which could be great for just chilling on off periods calm down, take a breath etc. One thing that didn't catch my eye as much was their dorms. The one dorm we visited looked a little dirty and very cramped even though it was a two bed room. I like the idea of dorming and would love to do it but just not Cal Poly Pomona style. When choosing a college here are some things I look for and short reasons why. Small Campus - it would be easy to get around to all your classes and you wouldn't get tired going from one side of the campus to another. Public or Private - I wouldn't mind too much but I feel like private schools have more rules, restrictions and just a lot more strict in general but they have way better educational factors, their professors are more dedicated and are happy to teach, public schools on the other hand offer more freedom are cheaper than private school and offer the same educational courses but you don't have the same connection with teachers. College Size - honestly study wise I would like a college to have less students, you get more study time and can concentrate more, socially a bigger college would be nicer because you would always be busy with friends, parties, homework and tests. Location - I would want to stay away from the city because I feel like the city life would be very distracting. Access to Professors - this is very important to me especially if I was in college having a professor that knows you sounds very helpful so you could get help from him/her almost anytime. Large vs Small Class - small class definitely so you have more student teacher time. Distance from Home - I want to go to a college that is farther away from home because I want to gain that independence to be able to live on my own without financial support from my family.
Reflection 2 of 3 (Admissions)
Three majors that I would possibly be interested in the future are Film and Theater, Business and Engineering. I am pretty sure Cal Poly Pomona offers all three of these majors/studies. I definitely will consider Cal Poly Pomona when deciding which colleges to apply to but there are also others that are higher on my rank and harder to get into Yale, UCLA, Cal Arts, CSU Fullerton and maybe more soon to come. Another important thing that collages look at are SAT/ACT scores, for Cal Poly you need 460/570 on SAT Critical Reading and a 490/620 on SAT Math (they don't check SAT Writing scores), ACT Composite 20/26 ACT English 19/25 ACT Math 22/27. The cost for Cal Poly Pomona including tuition, room and board, books and other expenses comes to about $22,571 for in-state students. Fortunately for some people there are financial aid packages given to those who can not afford the full price of college. The financial aid in grants was $8956 and in loans it was $5514 in the 2011 and 2012 year. As far as opportunities in college go I would love to be able to travel abroad but I think in school independent study would be important especially if I was going into a field like engineering where it seems like a lot of studying and focusing is needed to complete work and get decent grades on exams and finals.
