Today we volunteered over at our elementary school, High Tech Elementary. We participated in different activities with elementary school kids for Wonder Wednesday. Some activities included, indoor hockey, volleyball, Harry Potter Club, dancing, kickball, etc. I took part of the indoor hockey activity. There were about 4 helpers and I got the opportunity to be the referee. I had a great time playing with all the kids and watching them get smiles on their faces and having a great time. I also got to play kickball with some of my friends along with some new friends I made with the elementary school kids.
Today in our community service intersession we visited Casa De Amparo. Casa De Amparo takes care of kids (mostly teens) who suffer from abuse. There are also young women who are pregnant and military families who visit once in a while for a family visit. We actually didn't get to visit the kids due to some confidential information but we did visit the grounds and some of the room kids go to for books and "play space". We also visited two of the family visitation rooms where multiple families facing the same problems can talk with each other and learn to solve their problems. Our actual role at the center was to help clean and organize the family visitation rooms. This was a long and exhausting process which took a little under 3 hours.
Today we visited Brookedale Senior Living homes and also helped out at the Batiquitos Lagoon. At Brookedale we walked around the compound and talked to some seniors. We learned about why some seniors choose to stay at the homes and also about the history of the homes. We also took one of the older seniors to In-N-Out, a fast-food, burger, restaurant where we talked about where we were all from and what we enjoyed about where we lived. At Batiquitos Lagoon we were met by the president of the lagoon and told about the wild-life at the lagoon. He told us about some of the projects they were doing and asked us to fix the mulch trenches around trees that they planted. So we watered and fixed the trenches for the new trees and also took out some purple radishes.
