GEOMETRIC ConStruction
The project we have just finished is our Geometric Constructions project. In this project we were required to make an image using a compass, straight edge and obviously a pencil. These are images are called geometric constructions. In our constructions we had to include at least 1 square, 1 triangle, 1 regular polygon, 1 circle and 1 ellipse. We learned how to bisect angles, create triangles with different angle measures, squares and different polygons using geometric constructions.
This is the first benchmark we had to create. It was just a rough draft. We weren't supposed to use a compass or straight edge. I was experimenting with different patterns, trying to find one that I really liked. I then came across this one and realized I could create a story that goes along. The two different eyes represent two different perspectives in the world.
This is a picture of my second benchmark. In this benchmark we were supposed to use what we had practiced and learned, about geometric constructions and use them to construct our main sketch. During this benchmark we worked with compasses and straight edges.
The first step was to create an outer circle that was basically the "center point" that I used to create the other shapes. I then made the square by splitting the circle in four pieces, then connected the lines that touched the circle. From there I added a smaller circle from the center point of the square and the outer side of the square. An ellipse was created by overlapping 2 circles.

This is the final benchmark I created. I transformed my image into a picture of a dog. I still incorporated a similar story that follows the line of "two different perspectives". The dog and the circular eye represent 1 perspective while the ellipse represents another perspective. A change I made to this version was that I gave the dog a body, which adds character and life. I feel that by using lighter colors I could make the main image stand out more.
In the end I thought my final piece turned out fine. I feel that my two biggest successes were that managed my time well and that I knew what I was doing and followed the plan that I had made for myself, with minor changes. I think this helped me stay organized which is one of the habits of a mathematician. Organizing my work and time helped me get my work done on time with lots of successes. A challenge I had was actually figuring out my original design. I went through many designs in the original benchmark and couldn't decide from one. I didn't let this affect the rest of my "game plan" and solved my issue by choosing a top three, and continuing from there. Doing this project helped me gain more knowledge about planning and taking the right steps to move forward which I think will help me in the future.
